What does it mean, in this context, to have a child with an intellectual disability?<br /><br />These questions highlight a major problem with those that dwell in the ivory tower. Namely, how life within the isolation of the University keeps professors ignorant of valid personal and cultural issues such as Down Syndrome and Civil Rights until they become of professional interest--and usually as the result of having that isolation intruded upon by a personal crisis (as is the case with both authors here.) Both Civil Rights and Down Syndrome were important issues of Christian communities long before they entered the purview of the academy.
